Avoid Driving Distractions With These Safe Driving Tips (Updated)Editor’s note: This post was originally published on 8/4/16 and has been updated for accuracy and comprehension. Everybody needs a reminder about safe driving practices now and then.Unfortunately, it’s easier to get distracted than ever, especially with texting your besties, listening to (loud) music, munching on a snack – and “games” like Pokemon Go – there’s always interference to deal with. But here’s the thing: Driving while engaging in any of these activities is highly dangerous.Sadly, there’s always one or two – or several – individuals willing to take the risk, and who think, It’ll never happen to them!Don’t ignore the dangerHere’s a frightening example to drive the point home. Recently, a driver playing Pokemon Go crashed, causing damage to the vehicle – but thankfully, not to any people. It wasn’t a tragic situation, but it very well could have been.Stay alert – alwaysDon’t take any chances. Drivers, pay attention! Put your phones down and forget about Pokemon when you’re behind the wheel. It’s not just drivers who have to be alert, though. Pedestrians are also taking chances, noses down, looking at their screens, on the hunt for Pokemon points, updating their Facebook status, or adding their pictures to Instagram. When you’re driving, be on the lookout for pedestrians who are too engrossed in their phones to pay attention to where they’re going.Helpful hintsHere are some other safe driving tips to follow:? Passengers and children should never disrupt the driver. One small bump of the arm could cause you to abruptly steer into oncoming traffic or go off the road. Each and every passenger should be wearing seat belts and NEVER climbing around the car.? Put your cell phone in the glove box before you put your car in drive. It’s hugely distracting.? Don’t drive if you’re tired or under the influence of medication that makes you groggy.? Be careful when changing lanes. Always use your turning signal and be sure to check your blind spot.? If it’s deer season, be extra cautious during dawn and dusk, key times when deer are on the move.Be safe on the road, keep others safe and – for goodness sake – don’t try to rack up points on Pokemon Go.Once you’ve turned off your vehicle, feel free to release your inner Pokemon, show off those new baby pics, or your nature photography.Vehicle safety featuresMany of today’s newest vehicle models come with amazing safety features that are designed to help you stay aware of what’s happening around you.Back-up cameras, alerts that help you stay in your own lane, and even high-tech ways to make sure you’re not nodding off are all great ways to keep you – and others – safe.Stop in at our Serra Mazda location and talk to our expert sales staff about the great safety features available on the latest Mazda models.
