Driving in Dangerous Conditions: Here’s What to Do

Being a good driver is important for your safety, as well as that of others.

But, being a competent driver during ideal conditions isn’t the same thing as knowing how to handle yourself in adverse weather.

Check out these tips for staying safe, no matter the weather or road condition.

Be smart
In other words, use common sense.

Fog is one of the most dangerous driving conditions you can encounter. When visibility is low for this reason or another, slow down.

Slow way down!

If you can’t see more than a couple feet in front of your vehicle, it’s not safe for you to continue. Pull over at the first place where you can safely stop.

If it’s still close to the roadway, turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers who also won’t be able to see.

Do a road test

If the conditions start to become questionable while you’re out or you just aren’t sure when you’re ready to take off, do a little test.

In a safe area with no other vehicles approaching from either direction, stop quickly to assess how long it takes you to actually stop.

This will give you an idea of how much distance you need to leave between yourself and other vehicles.

Being aware also helps you to pay more attention to other drivers, making your reaction time quicker should you need to avoid a collision.

Pay attention to speed and distance
When you’re driving in dangerous conditions, the two most important factors for you to think about are how fast you’re going and keeping a safe distance between your vehicle and others.

When the road is icy, wet, snow-covered, or your visibility is obstructed – you need to reduce your speed accordingly.

Likewise, these conditions require that you don’t tailgate and that you leave plenty of room to stop safely.

Always use caution
Driving is enjoyable when the sky is blue, the sun is shining, and you can just cruise along without a care in the world.

When weather conditions are the opposite of that perfect day, you have to be extra-alert.

Drive slowly and don’t follow other cars too closely.
